“Hi guys, I'm Charlotte! I went to uni straight after school but unfortunately only lasted 4 weeks before dropping out. I had struggled since 4th year at school with my mental health and I was just too unwell to study at that time. I took two years out and in that time I worked as a lifeguard and as a support worker. In this time I also received my diagnosis of autism. Once I had this diagnosis, I felt a lot happier in myself; I finally knew why I had issues with fitting and being 'different'. I then felt able to try going back to uni.
The second time around was a lot more successful that the first. I was aware of my struggles and the uni was able to put supportive measures in place as well as give me the reasonable adjustments I needed to succeed. I am particularly interested in environmental radiation and I have just started working on my dissertation project which is based on Chernobyl. My aim is to secure a place as a PhD student at the University of Stirling after I graduate. If you are neurodivergent and want to continue in education after school I would highly recommend being open and honest with your college/uni to allow them to put support you in the best way.
Being autistic is not without challenges and struggles, but it is part of who I am and I believe it has been helpful in my academic journey thus far giving me the focus and determination to succeed.“
