Natalie Lamb

“Hi! My name is Natalie Lamb and I am the National Water Industry Account Manager at a company called QCL (http://www.qclwater.com). The work I do is all about generating awareness of brand new innovative and advanced analytical solutions and steering these technologies from trial to implementation in the water industry. Sounds like a mouthful, doesn’t it!

I did my PhD in Civil Engineering and Microbiology with Anglian Water and the University of Sheffield. My research was all about making water safer for generations to come by looking at the possibility to treat and distribute water without the use of chemicals in future.

Both my current job and my PhD are/were very hands on and related to the real world. I am out there in the field, working with the water, then analysing what is going on and why. I love every minute of my work, the challenges, the impact of my work and just learning so much.

My dyslexia mostly manifests itself with memory and with numbers. I can't spell the world scarf, I struggle with 24h timings and I will never know my 3 times table but my inside-the-box thinking is other's outside-the-box-thinking, I can remember some weird and wonderful facts and I really take care that people can understand what I’m talking about when I speak.

If you would have told me when I was 18 that I would have done an engineering PhD, there is no way I would have believed you. I had never even heard of a PhD- I was the first one in my family to go to university after sixth form. That's why I'm so glad I visited Disability & Dyslexia Support Service when I was at college. They provided me with help at university, but most of all, they helped me understand myself and why I was having these difficulties. I may bamboozle every spellchecker but I can sign my name as Dr Lamb with a PhD in Civil Engineering and Microbiology!“
