Sam Athey
”Hi everyone! I’m Sam, a PhD candidate at @UofTEarthSci. I’m studying the release pathways of microfibers and associated chemical contaminants from domestic laundry, as well as solutions for mitigating contaminant release. Through my work, I aim to encourage researchers and the public to rethink how we evaluate and communicate anthropogenic microfibers as environmental contaminants. I also actively work to engage the public around discussions about plastic pollution and microfibers with the UofT Trash Team.
I have ADHD. Being diagnosed as an adult about 5 years ago, I spent many years in school struggling to learn material in an environment created to facilitate learning in neurotypical students. I remember being frustrated at times because I had to work so much harder than other students in order to maintain good grades. It came a lot easier when I learned more about how people learn differently and considered what styles of teaching/study worked best for my neurodivergent brain. This still holds true today in grad school.
While some may see ADHD as a disability, I see it as a super power! My ability to think outside the box and visualize solutions a bit differently than others has been important in my work as a scientist. Another great characteristic of an ADHD scientist: staying calm under pressure and addressing problems with a can-do attitude!
When I’m not in the lab, you can find me reading books or visiting local bookshops :) “
